Christina Ricci Says Johnny Depp Explained What Being Gay Means As A Child

Christina Ricci was only nine years old when she filmed the 1990s film Mermaids, with Johnny Depp, Cher, and Depp's then-girlfriend Winona Ryder. Now 42, the actress recalled learning an important lesson from him at a young age.

She recalled the experience while speaking with Andy Cohen on his Serious XM show. Here's what she said about a conversation she had with Johnny Depp as a child on the set of Mermaids after witnessing a confrontation between two people.

What Exactly Was The Conversation With Johnny Depp For/

"There was something going on on set, and someone was not being nice to someone else. And they were like, 'Oh, well, he might be homophobic,' "And then I was like, 'Well, I don't understand what that is.' And I was in Winona's trailer, and she was like, 'I don't know how [to explain].' So she put me on the phone with Johnny, and Johnny explained it to me," she recalled.

What Did Johnny Depp Do?

According to Ricci, Depp explained it in "the simplest terms" and "very matter-of-factly."

"He was like, 'It's when a man wants to have sex with a man and when a woman wants to have sex with a woman.' And I was like, 'Ah, okay,' " she said.

What Did Winona Ryder Do?

Cohen joked about the experience for the actress by saying, "I love it that Winona Ryder had to put you on the phone with Johnny Depp to get that story that she couldn't spit it out in some way, or, I mean, you've got Cher in the next trailer." To it, Ricci responded, "I know; we should've run right over there."

Where Are They Now?

While Depp and Ryder dated from 1989 until 1993, Ricci went on to star alongside Depp in several films later. The films include the 1998 comedy Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, the 1999 horror Sleepy Hollow, and The Man Who Cried in 2000. The two are also set to appear in Boris Acosta's upcoming Depp documentary Johnny's Inferno.

The project is slated for a release in October and focuses on the star's personal life struggles. It is the latest in the director Dante's Inferno series of films. Ricci, most recently known for Yellowjackets, was nominated for seven Emmy Awards last month, which included a nomination for best drama. Ricci also starred as a nominee when she was nominated for outstanding supporting actress In a drama series.
