Packers Should Bring Kevin King Back, Says Insider

The Green Bay Packers revamped their already impressive defense with multiple picks in the NFL draft. They boasted one of the league's most physical and versatile units last season, and only figure to get better in 2022.

Matt LaFleur has arguably the most talented CB trio in the league, yet that doesn't mean they can't add even more firepower.

King's Physical Traits Are Impressive

Kevin King is still a free agent. He's dealt with injuries, but Alex Kay of Bleacher Report believes he should get another chance to prove his worth in Green Bay:

"The cornerback stands at 6’3″, 200 pounds and possesses uncanny speed and athleticism for a player of his size. King’s frame allows him to take on assignments against some of the league’s biggest wideouts, and his quickness allows him to keep pace with burners," Kay wrote. "While injuries have been a thorn in the 2017 second-round draft pick’s side—2019 was the only season in which he participated in more than 11 games—King can still be a decent depth option for any franchise that needs to reinforce its secondary without spending a fortune."He's Underrated

King may not be a fan favorite in Green Bay, and understandably so. But it's not like he can't play. Prior to injuries, he was actually quite a serviceable CB, explains Packers insider Timothy Lindsey:

"The free agent cornerback has a history of getting burned by faster receivers in important moments. However, his 2019 season was one of the more impressive cornerback seasons in Green Bay history," Lindsey wrote. "He played in 15 games, which is the most he has played in for one season in his career. He recorded five interceptions, which is tied for the most in a season in Packers history since Charles Woodson had seven in 2011. He set career-highs in passes defensed (15), tackles (66), and tackles for loss (3). Despite inconsistent play, King has shown that he can play at a very high level. He's A Familiar Face

Another potential perk of bringing him back is the fact that he's already familiar with their defensive scheme, even if he won't be a starter:

"King knows the system that defensive coordinator Joe Barry has in place," Lindsey added. "His familiarity is what could prompt Gutekunst to bring him back on another one-year deal. It would be a quietly good move on both sides."Depth Is Always Welcome

We know King isn't and will never be better than Jaire Alexander, Eric Stokes, and/or Rasul Douglas. All things considered, the Packers might have the best CB trio in the NFL.

But you can never have too much depth in this league, and it's not like he'd demand a big salary. King is still young, so he must prove himself to get a better deal elsewhere.
